Age Calculator
Enter a date of birth to see how old that person is today.
How to use the Age Calculator
- Set the Date of birth field to the year, month and day. It starts at 1 January 2000.
- Press Calculate and the age today appears in the result line below.
- For someone else, change the date and press Calculate again.
How the birthday check is made
The birth year is subtracted from the current year, then a year is taken back off if this month is earlier than the birth month, or the same month but an earlier day. The new age therefore applies from the birthday itself, and someone born on 29 February moves up on 1 March in a common year.
Why the date is read in local time
A date written as 2000-01-01 is read by browsers as midnight UTC, which lands a day earlier anywhere behind UTC and shows one year too few on a birthday. This page builds the date at local midnight instead, so the answer holds in every time zone.
Frequently asked questions
How is age counted here?
The international way: you turn one year older on your birthday. If your birthday has not arrived yet this year, you are still the previous age.
What is the difference from 'year age'?
Year age is simply the current year minus the birth year, ignoring the birthday. It is used in some countries for school years and military service, and it can be one year higher than your actual age.
Does it show months and days as well?
No. The result is a whole number of years. There is no count of days lived and no second date field for measuring a gap between two dates.
Can I work out an age on a future date?
No. The comparison always uses the moment you press Calculate, so for another reference date, add or subtract the years yourself.
What age does it give on the birthday itself?
The new one. A year is only subtracted while the birthday is still ahead, so from that morning onward you get the higher number.
