Korean Age Calculator
Calculate your exact international age under Korea's unified age law.
How to find your Korean age
Enter your date of birth and press Calculate. You will see your international age โ the number Korea now uses for almost everything โ along with the traditional Korean age so you can compare the two.
If someone in Korea asks how old you are today, the international age is the answer they expect. The older counting system is still heard in casual conversation, but it no longer appears on documents.
Korea counts age in three different ways
| System | How it works | Age | Used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| International age | Starts at 0, increases on your birthday | 25 before 15 Aug, 26 after | Everything legal and official since June 2023 |
| Korean age (counting age) | Starts at 1, everyone gains a year on 1 January | 27 all year | Casual conversation only |
| Year age | Current year minus birth year | 26 all year | A few specific laws |
The gap between international age and Korean age is one or two years. It is two years if your birthday has not arrived yet this year, and one year if it has already passed. That is why the same person can honestly give two different ages depending on the month.
What changed in June 2023
On 28 June 2023 South Korea standardised on international age for legal and administrative purposes. Overnight, most people became one or two years younger on paper. The change removed a long-running source of confusion in contracts, medical records and insurance, where it was not always clear which count a document meant.
Nothing about the calculation itself changed โ international age is the same age you already use in your own country. What changed is which number the government and companies treat as official.
Where the old counts still appear
Year age, the current year minus your birth year, survives in a handful of places because it is simpler to administer for a whole birth cohort at once. Military conscription and the rules on buying alcohol and tobacco are the commonly cited examples: everyone born in the same year is treated the same way regardless of birth month.
Korean counting age has no legal force any more, but you will still hear it. School years are organised by birth year, so classmates think of themselves as the same age, and that habit carries into adult conversation. If a Korean friend says an age that seems one or two years too high, this is usually why.

Frequently asked questions
What is my Korean age?
Take the current year, subtract your birth year and add one. Someone born in 2000 is 27 in Korean age during 2026, while their international age is 25 or 26 depending on whether their birthday has passed.
Is Korean age still used?
Not for anything official. Since 28 June 2023 South Korea uses international age for legal and administrative purposes. Korean counting age survives only in casual conversation.
Why is the difference sometimes one year and sometimes two?
Korean age adds a year on 1 January rather than on your birthday. Before your birthday arrives the gap is two years; after it passes the gap is one year.
What is year age?
The current year minus your birth year, ignoring the birth month. A few laws still use it, including military service and the age limits for alcohol and tobacco.
