How to use the Online Stopwatch

  1. Press Start. The display counts in minutes, seconds and hundredths, and the button becomes Stop.
  2. Press Lap while it runs to record the current time. Laps stack up newest first.
  3. Press Stop to pause. Pressing Start again continues instead of restarting.
  4. Press Reset to clear the display to 00:00.00 and empty the lap list.

Each lap shows its split and the running total

Pressing Lap records two figures side by side: the split, which is the time since the previous lap, and the total since the stopwatch started. With three or more laps the fastest and slowest splits are marked. The newest entry sits at the top and carries the highest number. Copy laps puts the list on your clipboard as a table that pastes straight into a spreadsheet.

Why a background tab does not lose time

The digits repaint with requestAnimationFrame, which browsers slow or stop for a tab you are not watching, so the display can look frozen. The time itself is read from the system clock, so on return the reading is correct.

Frequently asked questions

How precise is it?

Time is recorded to 1/100 of a second, which is enough for workouts, cooking, presentations and classroom use.

What does the lap button do?

It saves the current time as a split and keeps the stopwatch running, so you can record each segment of a run or each round of a workout.

What happens after an hour?

An hours column appears at the front, so one hour and five minutes reads 1:05:00.00.

Do the lap times survive a refresh?

Yes. The count and the lap list are kept in this browser, so a reload or a closed tab picks up where it left off. Reset clears them, and a run left going for more than twelve hours without being opened is discarded.

Does stopping erase my laps?

No. Stop only pauses the count and the laps stay on screen. Reset is the only thing that empties the list, and it also returns the display to 00:00.00.

Are there keyboard shortcuts?

Space starts and stops, L records a lap, R resets and F opens the full-screen view with large digits. The Lap button is disabled while the stopwatch is stopped.
