How to use the Pressure Converter

  1. Type the reading into the Value field. The page opens on bar to psi.
  2. Choose the unit you have in the From list and the one you want in the To list.
  3. The converted number appears under the fields as you type, rounded to six decimal places.

Tyre pressures across the everyday units

A tyre at 32 psi is at about 2.21 bar, or 221 kilopascals, which is why a pump marked in bar and a door sticker marked in psi look unrelated. Kilopascals are not on the list here, so convert to pascals and move the decimal point three places.

The exact factors behind each unit

The pascal is the base unit, one newton over one square metre, and the rest are defined against it. A bar is a round 100,000 pascals; a standard atmosphere is 101,325.

The psi column is rounded to four decimal places.

Frequently asked questions

Which unit is used for tyre pressure?

PSI in the US, and kPa or bar in most other countries. Many pumps show both.

How many pascals is one atmosphere?

101,325 pascals, which is standard sea level atmospheric pressure.

How many psi is 2 bar?

About 29.01 psi, since one bar is roughly 14.5038 psi. Pumps marked in bar and cars specified in psi meet around this figure.

Is kPa on the unit list?

No. The four options are pascal, bar, psi and atmosphere. Convert to pascals and divide by 1,000, so 2 bar is 200,000 pascals, or 200 kPa.

Is an atmosphere the same as a bar?

Close but not equal. One atmosphere is 101,325 pascals against 100,000 for a bar, so it is 1.325 per cent larger. Treat them as interchangeable only for rough work.
