CalcTimer

Word Frequency Counter

Shows which words appear most often in your text, ranked by frequency.

How to use the Word Frequency Counter

  1. Paste the text you want to analyse into the input box on this page.
  2. The ranking below refills on every keystroke with the ten most frequent words.
  3. Edit or replace the text and the count is worked out again from the top.

What the counter treats as one word

The text is lowercased, then cut at every character that is not a letter, a digit, an underscore or a Hangul syllable. So Book and book share a row, user_id stays whole, and state-of-the-art becomes four entries. An accented letter breaks a word apart: cafe with an acute accent is counted as caf.

Grammatical words fill the top rows

There is no stopword list, so the, and, of and to are counted like any other word and usually take the highest counts in English prose. To reach the terms that describe your text, strip those words before pasting.

Frequently asked questions

Are single characters counted?

No. Only words of two characters or more are counted, which cuts out most noise.

How many words are shown?

The top ten by frequency.

Are numbers counted as words?

Yes. Digits count as word characters, so 2026 and 1080p are ranked like anything else. A lone digit is dropped, being under two characters.

Can I see more than the top ten?

No. The list is cut at ten and there is no setting to extend it. To look further down, delete the words already at the top and paste again.

How are words with equal counts ordered?

By where they first appeared. The sort compares counts only, so tied words keep the order the text introduced them in.
