- Leave a box empty and its border turns orange with a prompt to fill it in.
Tip on the subtotal or on the total with tax
The percentage applies to whatever you put in Bill amount, so you decide what you are tipping on. In the United States, tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the norm; the charged total is more generous.
Why the shares may not add back up to the total
All three figures are rounded to a whole unit, and the per-person share is the rounded total divided by the head count, rounded again. On a 50,000 bill with a 10 percent tip split three ways, the shares fall one unit short.
Frequently asked questions
What tip percentage is normal?
It varies by country. Around 15 to 20 percent is typical in US restaurants, while service is often included or tipping is uncommon elsewhere.
What if I enter zero people?
You get a warning rather than a number. Dividing by zero is impossible, so the calculator refuses it and asks you to check the input.
How much is a 20 percent tip on a bill of 60?
The tip is 12 and the total is 72. Split four ways that is 18 each, and split two ways it is 36 each.
Can it split the bill unevenly?
No. The total is divided by the head count, so everyone pays the same share. Run each subtotal through separately instead.
Does the tip percentage have to be a whole number?
No. The Tip (%) box takes decimals, so 12.5 and 17.5 work as well as 15 or 20, and so do the bill and the head count.
