Team Generator

Enter your names and the number of teams, and everyone is assigned at random.

How to use the Team Generator

  1. Type the names into Names (comma separated); spaces on either side of each name are trimmed.
  2. Set Number of teams, or leave it blank and it falls back to two.
  3. Press Make teams and the split appears below under a draw number, newest at the top.

Shuffle first, then deal one name at a time

The list is shuffled so that every order is equally likely, then the names are dealt round the teams one at a time, as you would deal cards, so teams end up within one member of each other.

How common splits come out

Sizes are decided by the deal rather than the shuffle, so they come out the same every time for a given number of names, no matter how the shuffle happens to fall.

Frequently asked questions

What if the names do not divide evenly?

Any remainder is assigned in order starting from the first team.

Can I see previous splits?

Yes. Each draw is numbered and added to the list below, newest first, and the last fifty are saved in this browser, so they survive a reload.

Is there a limit on names?

No hard limit, though very long lists get awkward to enter.

Can I set the team size instead of the number of teams?

Not directly; the box asks for a number of teams. Divide your head count by the size you want, so 20 names in fours means entering 5.

Does pressing the button again give a different split?

Yes. Every press reshuffles the whole list from scratch, so the same names land in different teams each time.

What if I ask for more teams than there are names?

The extra teams appear with nothing in them, because the names are dealt round in turn and then run out.
