Sort Lines Alphabetically

Sorts your lines into ascending alphabetical order.

How to use the Sort Lines Alphabetically

  1. Paste your list into the input box with one item on each line.
  2. The output box refills as you type, holding those lines in ascending order.
  3. Empty lines are dropped, so the result can be shorter than what you pasted.
  4. Press the copy button to take the sorted list with you.

Numbers are compared as text, not as values

Comparison starts at the first character, so 10 sorts before 2 and version 1.10 sorts before 1.9. Pad the numbers with leading zeros, writing 01, 02 and 10, and the text order matches the numeric one. Dates behave the same way unless written year first.

Blank lines go, duplicates stay

Any line that is empty or made only of whitespace is removed before sorting, which is why the output can be shorter. Repeated lines are all kept and end up side by side, since nothing removes duplicates.

Frequently asked questions

Does it sort numbers correctly?

It sorts as text, so 10 comes before 2. Pad numbers with leading zeros for a numeric order.

Can I sort in reverse?

Ascending order only in the current version.

Does it remove duplicate lines?

No. Every line survives the sort, and identical lines end up adjacent. That makes duplicates easy to spot, but you delete them yourself.

Do capital letters sort before lowercase ones?

No. The comparison follows locale rules rather than raw character codes, so Apple and apple land together.

Can I sort by the second word in each line?

No. Every comparison starts at the beginning of the line. To sort on a later field, move it to the front of each line first.
