Volume Converter
Convert between volume units including litres, millilitres and gallons.
How to use the Volume Converter
- Type the amount into Value. The page opens on Liter to Gallon (US).
- Choose the unit you have in the From list, then the unit you want in the To list.
- Read the answer below the fields. It updates as you type, with no button to press.
Four factors, all referred to the litre
Your figure is turned into litres with the From factor, divided by the To factor, then rounded to six decimals. The gallon here is the US liquid gallon at 3.78541 litres, making one litre 0.264172 US gallons and one cubic metre 264.172177 of them.
| Unit | Litres |
|---|---|
| Milliliter | 0.001 |
| Liter | 1 |
| Gallon (US) | 3.78541 |
| Cubic meter | 1000 |
Cups and spoons are not on the list
Only four units are offered, so recipe measures have to become millilitres first. Check which cup a recipe means: a US cup is 240 ml under nutrition labelling and 236.6 ml by the customary definition, while a metric cup is 250 ml.
Frequently asked questions
Are US and UK gallons the same?
No. A US gallon is about 3.785 litres and an imperial gallon is about 4.546 litres, a difference of roughly 20 percent. This calculator uses the US gallon.
Can I use it for cooking?
Yes, the millilitre and litre conversions cover most recipe measurements.
How many litres are in a US gallon?
3.78541 litres, the figure this page uses for the US liquid gallon. Twenty US gallons works out at 75.71 litres.
Is a cubic metre the same as a kilolitre?
Yes. One cubic metre is exactly 1,000 litres, which is why a water bill counted in cubic metres and a tank rated in litres line up with no odd factor.
Why does my answer show as 0?
Because results round to six decimal places and yours is smaller. One millilitre in cubic metres is 0.000001, and anything below half of that prints as 0.
