Online Metronome
An online metronome that clicks in time so you can practice at a steady tempo.
How to use the Online Metronome
- Drag the slider to the tempo you want. It covers 40 to 240 BPM.
- Use the minus and plus buttons on either side for single-BPM adjustments.
- Press Start. A click sounds on every beat, and moving the slider while it runs changes the spacing at once.
Reading BPM against the Italian tempo marks
BPM counts beats in one minute, so 120 BPM is a click every half second and 60 BPM one click a second. When a score gives a word instead of a number, the ranges below are the usual reading, though editions disagree at the edges.
| Tempo mark | Approximate BPM |
|---|---|
| Largo | 40-60 |
| Adagio | 66-76 |
| Andante | 76-108 |
| Moderato | 108-120 |
| Allegro | 120-168 |
| Presto | 168-200 |
How the click is made and when it drifts
No audio file is downloaded. The browser generates a 1000 Hz tone lasting about a twentieth of a second, which is what gives the short tick. The spacing is kept by a browser timer, so a background tab can let beats slip by a few milliseconds.
Frequently asked questions
How do I change the tempo?
Drag the slider or use the plus and minus buttons to move one beat per minute at a time.
I cannot hear anything.
Check your device volume and that the tab is not muted. Sound begins only after you press start, since browsers require an interaction before playing audio.
Is the timing accurate?
Close enough for practice, not for recording. The beat spacing comes from a browser timer, which drifts by a few milliseconds when the tab sits in the background.
Can I accent the first beat of the bar?
No. Every click has the same pitch and volume and there is no time signature setting, so count the downbeat yourself.
Is the tempo remembered next time?
No. The page opens at 120 BPM on every visit, because nothing is stored, so set your tempo again each time.
