How to use the Countdown to a Date

  1. Pick your day in the Target date field; until you do it reads Choose a date.
  2. The countdown begins at once and refreshes every second.
  3. It reads as days, hours, minutes and seconds left, counting to 00:00.
  4. Reloading the page clears the field, so set the date again when you return.

It stops at the start of the day, not the end

The target is midnight at the beginning of the date you choose, in your device's time zone. For an event that evening the counter reaches zero many hours early, and there is no time-of-day field to aim at a particular hour.

Nothing is saved and nothing sounds

Your chosen date lives only in the date field. It is not written to browser storage, so a reload or a closed tab loses it. When the count runs out the display says the day has arrived, and that is all: no tone and no notification.

Frequently asked questions

What time of day does it count to?

Midnight, 00:00, on the date you select.

What if I enter a past date?

Dates that have already passed are shown as reached rather than as a negative countdown.

Can I count down to a specific hour?

No. The field takes a date only and the count ends at 00:00 on it. For an evening deadline, aim at the next day and read the hours off.

Does it keep counting while I use another tab?

It carries on, though browsers slow timers in hidden tabs. Each refresh recalculates from the current clock, so it corrects itself when you look again.

Which time zone does it use?

Your device's. Midnight is taken as local midnight, so a countdown to something abroad is off by the gap between the two zones.
