How to use the Discount Calculator

  1. Pick a mode at the top: sale price, discount rate, stacked discounts, or buy X get Y.
  2. Fill in the fields. Prices get thousands separators as you type, and a rate of 30 percent is entered as 30.
  3. The answer and the working appear as you type. Press Calculate to have any empty field pointed out.

Two discounts in a row never add up

A further 10 percent off an item already reduced by 20 percent is not 30 percent off, because the second cut lands on the reduced price. The combined rates below are worth knowing before a sale, as the shortfall grows with the size of the two discounts. The Stacked discounts mode does this for any two rates and takes a fixed-value coupon off at the end.

What a multi-buy deal really saves

Spread the price you pay across every item you take home, free ones included. The Buy X get Y mode returns the price per item and the discount it amounts to.

DealEffective discount
Buy 1 get 150%
Buy 2 get 133.33%
Buy 3 get 125%
Buy 5 get 116.67%

Rates above 100 or below zero

Nothing stops you entering either, and the arithmetic runs through literally. A discount over 100 percent gives a negative sale price, which signals a typo. A negative rate works as a mark-up: minus 10 against 50,000 returns 55,000.

Frequently asked questions

Can I stack multiple discounts?

Yes. The Stacked discounts mode applies two rates one after the other and shows the final price with the effective discount. 30 percent off then 10 percent off comes to 37 percent, not 40.

How is rounding handled?

Results are rounded to the nearest whole currency unit.

What is 20 percent off 50,000?

40,000, with 10,000 saved. Enter 50000 as the original price and 20 as the discount to see both figures at once.

Can it work out the discount rate from a sale price?

Yes. Choose Discount rate and enter the original price and the sale price. 50,000 reduced to 35,000 is 30 percent off.

Does it handle tax or a fixed-value coupon?

Tax is not handled. A coupon worth a set amount can be entered in Stacked discounts, where it is subtracted after the percentages have come off.
