GMT in winter, BST in summer, switched without a setting
The time is read through the Europe/London zone, so it moves to British Summer Time on the last Sunday in March and back to Greenwich Mean Time on the last Sunday in October by itself. GMT matches UTC exactly; BST runs an hour ahead.
The weeks when London is only four hours ahead of New York
Both countries move their clocks, but not on the same dates. The United States springs forward on the second Sunday in March and back on the first Sunday in November, while the United Kingdom uses the last Sunday in March and October. In the gaps the difference is four hours.
Frequently asked questions
What time zone does London use?
Greenwich Mean Time in winter and British Summer Time, UTC+1, in summer.
When does British Summer Time apply?
From the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October. The clock here adjusts automatically.
Is London time the same as UTC?
Only in winter. From late October to late March London runs on GMT, which matches UTC. The rest of the year it is an hour ahead on BST.
How far ahead of New York is London?
Five hours for most of the year. For about two weeks in March and a week around the start of November the two are out of step and it is four.
Why is the second different from my phone?
The page converts the clock on the device showing it, so any drift there appears here too. It also redraws once a second rather than continuously.
What time is sunrise in London today?
Todayโs sunrise, sunset and day length in London are shown under the clock. They are calculated from the cityโs latitude and longitude, so allow a minute or two either way.
