Random String Generator
Generate an 8-character random string of letters and numbers, handy for temporary IDs and test data.
How to use the Random String Generator
- Press Generate string for a fresh eight-character string of capital letters and digits.
- Press Copy result to put the string now on screen onto your clipboard.
- Each string joins the numbered list below, newest first, and Clear history empties it.
An alphabet of 36 characters, upper case only
Strings are built from A to Z and 0 to 9, eight characters long, with no lower-case letters and no symbols. That gives 36 to the power of 8, about 2.82 trillion combinations. Both O and 0 are in the set, as are I and 1, so a string read aloud deserves a second look.
Fine for test data, wrong for secrets
The characters come from the browser's ordinary random number generator, which is not cryptographically secure. Use these strings for test records, placeholder codes and throwaway labels, and a password manager for anything guarding an account.
Frequently asked questions
What is it for?
Seeding test databases, generating placeholder codes and creating short throwaway identifiers.
Can I make it longer?
It is fixed at 8 characters. For unique identifiers in production, use the UUID generator instead.
Can I use this as a password?
No. The generator behind it is not cryptographically secure, so the output should never protect an account. Use a password manager instead.
Does it include lower-case letters or symbols?
No. The set is the 26 capital letters plus the digits 0 to 9, and the length is fixed at eight, so every string looks like A7KD2XQ9.
How likely is it to repeat a string?
Low until you generate in bulk. Across 2.82 trillion possibilities, a duplicate somewhere in a batch reaches about 16 percent at a million strings and 51 percent at two million.
